Come on now, it's just the winter olympics. It is and always will be simple entertainment. Besides, should people be travelling all over the place nowadays given the numerous Covid variants?
China preaches against bullying but its narrative at times sounds quite extreme itself.
There is no need for threats over trivial matters like sports. Credibility stock takes a hit.
UPDATE
https://www.un.org/press/en/2021/ga12391.doc.htm
Apparently the UN thinks otherwise but I still dont think sports and politics/globalization is a good mix.
Abdulla Shahid (Maldives), President of the General Assembly, said the draft resolution on sport and the Olympic ideal urges countries to observe the Olympic Truce — an ancient tradition of halting conflict in order to give the Games’ athletes and spectators safe passage. Emphasizing that the world’s common destiny draws together every national flag and background, he said nations should use sport as a tool to support dialogue and reconciliation, striving for a peaceful world aligned with the principles and values enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
I get the gist behind the idea but i still think that humanity can and should unite on more unquestionably and undeniable issues that pose more of a risk against the goals of the UN. After all, sports is entertainment and it involves competition which can be divisive. I dont think much emphasis should be placed on trivial matters when dealing with the future of the planet.
As far as the truce itself, I thought that would go on without mentioning.
Oh, but https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/us-officials-boycott-beijing-olympics-cnn-2021-12-06/ the US appears poised to not show up. And they do have the right to do that.
Im of the opinion that such an act by Joe Brinden would be something most people would expect... Trump to pull? And he says " I don’t think about the former president”. Well, maybe subconsciously, he does wish to emulate him strangely enough.
China responds immediately with hostility by suggesting the US would "pay a price". https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/china-says-us-diplomatic-boycott-winter-olympics-could-harm-co-operation-2021-12-07/
That's like getting mad over a video game. You can have fun without the most popular kid. Besides...perhaps it could serve as quite the foreshadowing...
Think of the headlines...
"US excludes itself from world event."
"Biden asks for cooperation, fails to show up to humanitarian event"
"American exceptionalism flagrant, fouls up Olympics"
"UN extends a hand, US turns its back"
I think the representative of the Russian Federation summed it up best.
" The Olympic ideals remain as relevant as ever and can help foster harmony in today’s complex world but sport should not become a political tool or an instrument of intrigue, such as blackmail, and it must never be used as an instrument of power involving sanctions."
